A successful digital preservation programme combines many different activities, from technical processes like file migration to international collaborations on best practices. In GLAMMIR organisations struggling to balance diminishing resources with growing mountains of data, the scope of work can seem overwhelming.

This half-day workshop will provide an introduction to digital preservation and its practical implementation, centring the collaborative nature of digital preservation. Participants will consider different types of relationships necessary for a successful programme; undertake a collaborative assessment to understand where their organisations can strengthen capability, and what resources and relationships are available to support that growth. Participants will also have an opportunity to experiment with tools to support digital preservation work, and to learn about the collaboration necessary to support those tools.

Understanding digital preservation from a relationship-based perspective highlights the different partnerships that may exist to support different financial, technical, ethical, and strategic organisational goals. A relationship-based perspective of digital preservation also presents new ways to understand the risks to be mitigated within a successful digital preservation programme.

PRESENTERS
Martin Gengenbach is the Digital Preservation Policy and Outreach Specialist for the Archives Library New Zealand. He works with stakeholders across the Archives and Library, and with external partners local and international, to grow digital preservation knowledge and capability throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Martin earned a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Blanche Joslin is a Digital Preservation Analyst at Archives Library New Zealand. She has studied Film + Photography Preservation and Collection Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, and earned her Master of Arts at the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Digital literacy programmes have existed for decades. Yet people and institutions continue to face misinformation, phishing, unsafe data practices, AI misuse, and declining trust in digital environments. Many existing approaches focus on knowledge, confidence, or technical skills, but do not show how people actually behave when they face uncertainty, risk, time pressure, or competing responsibilities.

This half-day workshop introduces the International Digital Driving License, or IDDL, as a practical framework for developing and assessing digital literacy through observable behaviour. Participants will work across three domains: Digital Skills, Cybersecurity Awareness, and AI Competency. Each domain will be explored through three core concepts, giving participants nine concepts in total.

The workshop will then apply these concepts through three realistic scenarios drawn from GLAMMIR contexts. Each scenario will be assessed using the IDDL triad model:

Knowledge — what the participant understands
Capability — what the participant can do in an authentic situation
Reflection — how the participant explains, evaluates, and justifies the decision

The scenarios will examine issues such as collection data, digital workflows, information quality, cybersecurity, AI-generated content, access, cultural authority, provenance, and responsible decision-making. Participants will not only discuss what should happen; they will work through the scenarios, make decisions, and reflect on the reasoning behind their actions.

The workshop will also consider practical digital capability challenges within GLAMMIR organisations, including data hygiene in complex or improvised systems, developing more agile approaches to problem-solving, and supporting digital learning when staff are under pressure or have limited capacity.

Through hands-on use of the IDDL approach, participants will explore how digital literacy can move beyond technical competence toward responsible, evidence-based digital behaviour.

Workshop outcomes

Workshop participants will:

• learn nine practical concepts across Digital Skills, Cybersecurity Awareness, and AI Competency;

• apply those concepts to three GLAMMIR-based scenarios;

• use the Knowledge, Capability, and Reflection triad to assess digital behaviour;

• identify risks involving data quality, cybersecurity, AI outputs, access, and cultural authority;

• practise explaining and justifying digital decisions;

• gain a practical understanding of how IDDL can support staff development, assessment, and digital capability planning in GLAMMIR organisations.

PRESENTER
Ahmad Ghandour is a Professor of E-Business and Information Systems with teaching and research experience across New Zealand, UAE, and Jordan. He completed his PhD at the University of Otago and works in digital literacy, AI competency, cybersecurity awareness, and digital transformation. He is the creator of the International Digital Driving License (IDDL), a behavioural digital capability framework designed to assess how people actually behave in digital environments through simulations, decision-making tasks, and reflective reasoning.

PRESENTER
Ash Mann has spent most of the last couple of decades inside the world of digital in cultural organisations - in-house, as an agency director, and now as an independent consultant. He works with leaders, teams, and organisations across Europe and North America on challenges that usually involve a messy combination of people, strategy, technology, and change.

He spends a lot of time thinking about the conditions that surround digital work and each year he explores a question about what makes digital work, or not. Last year it was failure, this year it’s the invisible labour that nobody budgets for or understands. 

He hosts the Digital Works podcast, writes a weekly newsletter, and lives in Göteborg on the west coast of Sweden with his wife and their new baby.
